One of Iowa's longest serving inmate has died in prison. In 1963, Robert Hammond, then 18, robbed and murdered a cab driver. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a life term at the Iowa State Penitentiary. Hammond began serving his sentence on April 16, 1963. He died in prison on January 14, 2026.
